Lose Weight and Gain Brain Cells in 30 Days

By ZedZap

Are you nuts? my friend asked.

I’d just told her I signed up for National Write A Novel in a Month (NaNoWriMo).  The entire month of November was to be dedcated to writing a 51,000 word novel.

Well, it did seem kind of crazy since it was Nov 6 on the day I signed up.

It didn’t help that I took off 12 days to fly around the midwest and pester relatives.

When the clock struck midnight on Nov 30, I’d only logged 35,000 words, but I was goofy-glad with some discoveries.

  1. The #1 being:  When you have an overwhelming job, just jump in and start.
  2. For heaven’s sake, don’t stop and look around. You’ll discover you’re in a big freakin’ pile of work, so just keep going.
  3. Decide that there are more important things than projects and enjoy people.

What I ended up with is a raucous, bawdyl romp through the classics that we were forced to read in high school. The Hulk. Dr Phil, and Nancy Drew were happy to join this great adventure, too.

So,  while I didn’t reach 51,000 words in 30 days, I’ll fininsh the last chapter this week.

Too bad I’ll still be nuts.

About Barb

I escaped from a hardscrabble farm in Oklahoma. I'm not sure why people think I have an accent. I miss the sunshine, but not the fried foods.

I really need to work on #3. Right now I’m wavering between feeling like I’m not writing enough and feeling like I’m not spending enough time reveling in the holiday season. After all, my manuscript will still be here in January, but Christmas won’t.

I can’t wait to read the new book.

Wow, Barb. I know “there’s never enough time to do anything,” but putting this challenge out to us in December? Have mercy! I’ll do it January if you promise to pester me relentlessly for updates. I have jotted down notes for years on my book about growing up in Stuyvesant Town in NYC, (Google “Stuyvesant Town” to see all the trouble my home romping grounds are going through.) I’ve even started my book once, and off to the side it fell. But you’re an inspiration, as always. Let’s swap when we’re both done, deal?

BTW: I’ve had two good interviews in the last 10 days… a sign of an easing recession? One is a second interview, which went real well, and the other one went real well too. I’ll have a second interview with that company sometime this month.

Any exciting new prospects popping up for you hubby yet? I hope so. Tell him my story for a bit of inspiration. Take care. ~ Les

Iapplaud the dedication. I am my own worst enemy when it comes to actually setting aside the time to write.

Good for you. Can’t wait to hear you read it.

I didn’t officially sign up with NaNoWroMo, but dedicated the month to making a real attempt toward finishing the novel I’m working on. I did write 12 (8-19) chapters, which came to about 36600 wds. I’m satisfied, and well on the way to finishing. (about 6 to go). It took me a couple of years to write the first 5.

Hooray, Beth. Can I post this on the Chrysalis site (using only your first name of course for privacy reasons) ?

Way to go. That’s a lot when you consider how long it took to finish the first chapters.

If you don’t want this comment posted about NaNOWriMo, would you like to say something else? B.
